The majority of scare necks were crafted in Scotland in the 1890s as the move way from long nose woods began to gain momentum. Long nose and scare neck woods are very much related in that both favoured the early scare or splice method of joining club shaft with club head.   Scare necks in the Antique Golf collection cover:

semi-long nose woods, measuring between three and four inches heel to toe
bulger woods, a more rounded head with a convex face
transitional woods, shorter than a long nose woods but with a flat face
short headed woods.  These early short head woods around 1900 carried the scare neck shaft head joining method until gradually superseded by the more conventional socket solution
