A true long nose wood will have been crafted on or before 1890 and the head will measure a minimum of four inches in length. The very scarcest long nose woods date back to the eighteenth century. Rare examples of long nose woods from the feather ball period circa (1800 - 1850) occasionally become available. Pre 1850 long nose woods in Scotland were carried under the left arm and early sets comprised up to six wooden clubs. | |||
| Early long nose woods were flatter in lie and longer in length than later examples. This design encouraged the player to sweep rather than strike the ball from tee to green. The vast majority of these woods however date from the nineteenth century Guttie Ball period (circa 1850 - 1900) and when in good condition with a recognized makers name are eminently collectable. | ||||
