Putters prior to 1850, i.e., pre-gutta ball were long headed, slightly shorter and more upright than the other long nose play clubs. Later in the 19th century, putter heads became shorter with a straight face, but it was not until 1880 that the first metal putters came into play. By 1900, wooden headed putters had almost become a novelty and all shapes and sizes of the metal variety started to appear. | |||
