Irons were introduced in Scotland from as early as 1775.  The early makers of irons were known as cleek makers and were effectively blacksmiths with access to a forge.  These early irons were designed to help the golfer out of difficult lies and irons like the lofter and the cleek began to replace the shorter more lofted long nose wooden clubs.  1879 saw an extension to the iron range with the arrival of the driving and lofting cleek, the rut niblick and the mashie. 1900 saw a further extension of the range with the birth of, amongst others, the mid-iron and the jigger.  Most Scottish made irons carry distinctive cleek maker's marks and the majority are marked "hand forged" which means they are hand finished.
